Glazer has ripped ESPN for stealing his scoops or attributing his info to “sources.” But there’s also a lot of professional respect between these fierce journalistic competitors.

When the well-respected Mortensen announced he was taking a leave from his ESPN duties to deal with Stage IV throat cancer, Glazer took to Twitter to express his admiration for the 64-year old reporter.

I’ve talked to Mortensen over the years. I remember him recalling how the late, great Boston Globe columnist Will McDonough advised him how to transition from newspapers to TV. Be yourself, McDonough told the young Mortensen.

McDonough was a pioneer, the first real print journalist to successfully cross into sports TV. Maybe that tutelage from McDonough was one of the reasons Mortensen decided to pay it forward with Glazer.

It was a classy move by Mortensen. And a classy response by Glazer. Bravo. Get well, Mort.
